As temperatures increase in North Queensland, Lower Burdekin Water channels, drains and recharge pits may appear to be enticing to cool off in. However, swimming in these areas is an extremely dangerous activity to partake in. LBW have recently removed makeshift dams from culverts that members of the public have installed to increase water levels in LBW channels. Apart from the danger involved, these actions obviously cause detriment to downstream irrigators. Furthermore, tampering with water flow is prosecutable under the Water Act 2000 with a maximum penalty of $217,365. This also applies to gates, boards sand dams and all other infrastructure involving water distribution. Pictured: illegal restriction of water.
